Victory Gallop - Part Two

"Victory Gallop, Part Two: His Stud Record And Conclusions As To Broodmare Sires He Should Be Crossed With", by Michael Ventura, copyright 2004.

Victory Gallop At The Stud
In a major-league surprise given his victories in 12f Belmont Stakes and 9f Whitney and placements in the 10f Travers and Dubai World Cup, Victory Gallop was 2nd on the freshman sire list last year and is now the leading 2nd crop sire in North America. He owes a lot of it to Fordyce, a daughter of Cox's Ridge out of an Alydar mare named Foresta who won 3 G2s and $636k.

Note that Fordyce's 4th dam Softly combined First Landing and Roman and that the cross of Cox's Ridge and Alydar resulted in 4x5 inbreeding to the excellent Calumet full sisters Miz Clementine and Two Lea (Bull Lea-Two Bob by The Porter); who both traced back to Gallopade's wonderful antebellum racing daughter Reel, the dam of Lecomte and the important early American sire War Dance. Gallopade was also the female line ancestress of Domino; the sire of the very important racer and sire Commando from the Darebin mare Emma C, a California bred representative of the Young Maid Of The Oaks (12-b) line the produced both Cox's Ridge and Victory Gallop himself.

Fordyce was bred to Victory Gallop his first year at stud to produce Victory USA, Victory Gallop's top earner in both this year and the last.

Victory Gallop's 2nd leading earner, Alcibiades S. (G2) runner-up Galloping Gal, is from an unraced AP Indy mare named Indy Flash. Indy Flash's dam was a Calumet bred Gleaming mare named Mirror Bright. Gleaming's 2nd dam was the Hall of Fame Calumet racefilly Twilight Tear, a daughter of Bull Lea o/o a Blue Larkspur mare tracing back to Mannie Himyar, a descendant of Gallopade (notice a pattern?), and the 2nd dam of Victory Gallop's 6th damsire Ariel Beauty besides being a full sister to Domino and Correction, the dam of Yankee, that 1901 Futurity winner I mentioned in connection with Victory Gallop's damline. (Victory Gallop's 6th dam Ariel Beauty was 3x6 to Mannie Himyar and Correction.)  Galloping Gal's 3rd dam was a close relative to Alydar (notice a pattern?), being by his sire Raise A Native and out of a mare by a son of Nasrullah bred to Alydar's 3rd dam Real Delight.

Victory Gallop's top earning colt is President's Cup winner Separato; his dam is by Alleged out of a mare by The Minstrel. Alleged is the best son of Victory Gallop's key ancestor Hoist The Flag and The Minstrel is bred on the same cross of Northern Dancer on a mare going back to Windfields that produced Victory Gallop's damsire Vice Regent.

It's very important to note that Victory U. S. A. is inbred 5x4 to the speed influence Raise A Native through Mr Prospector and Alydar; Galloping Gal is inbred 5x4 to the same through Mr Prospector and Alydar's close relative Mirror Bright, and Separato is inbred 4x3 to another strong speed influence in Hoist The Flag through Navel Orange and Alleged, besides being 4x4 to Northern Dancer. The only good one crossing Mr Prospector with his unraced full brother Red Ryder was $500K winner Man The Shipp, a son of Cryptoclearance. That and the Raise A Native linebreeding found in Victory U. S. A. and Galloping Gal makes me think Victory Gallop could take some inbreeding to Mr Prospector himself.

The other three stakes winners by Victory Gallop are Victory Alleged, out of an Alleged mare just like Seprato, Victory Thrill, out of a mare by Danzig's son Ascot Knight and 3x3 to Vice Regent, and Speedy Deedy, out of a mare by Shadeed, a son of Nijinsky out of an Alydar mare. Victory Gallop has sired a seventh horse of stakes winning quality in Jamaica H. (G2) runner-up Rousing Victory, who was out of a mare by Seattle Slew's half brother Lomond; Rousing Victory is 3x4x5 to Northern Dancer through Lomond, Vice Regent, and Nijinsky and 5x5 to '57 Champion Handicapper Dedicate through his fine daughters Mock Orange and Natashka. Note that Dedicate traced back to the same Gallopade female line as Vice Regent's 2nd grandsire Bunty Lawless and those Bull Lea mares: Twilight Tear, Two Lea, and Miz Clementine, who are found in the dams of three out of Victory Gallop's six stakes winners; in the case of his top-earner Victory U. S. A two of them being found in concert.

So looking at Victory Gallop's seven best so far, we find the best is 4x5 to Raise A Native through Alydar and Mr Prospector, and two others carry either Alydar or his close relative Pet Eagle. We also find two (Rousing Victory and Galloping Gal) have Seattle Slew's dam My Charmer, and that two (Rousing Victory and Speedy Deedy) have Nijinsky on their damsides. The main commonality between Nijinsky and Alydar is the cross of Bull Lea on a Blue Larkspur daughter that produced both Nijinsky's damsire Bull Page and Alydar's 3rd dam Real Delight. Thus here is the place to note that Cryptoclearance's 3rd dam Alablue is by Blue Larkspur and out of a mare by Sir Gallahad, a full brother to Bull Lea's sire Bull Dog.

Also note that two (Victory Alleged and Separato) are out of Alleged mares and thus inbreed 3x4 to the excellent speed influence Hoist The Flag. And that two (Victory Alleged and Speedy Deedy) have an obscure stallion named Misty Flight in either the 3rd or 4th generation of their dams. In his seemingly small, but evidently important way, Misty Flight helps tie together the sire and damside of Victory Gallop. The sire of 19 SWs, he is bred on the same cross of Princequillo over Mahmoud that produced Fappiano's 3rd dam Cequillo, and Misty Flight's 3rd damsire is Ariel, the sire of Victory Gallop's 6th dam Ariel Beauty. (Misty Flight's best quality source is the damline of Lane's End stallion Silver Ghost; and a full sister of Misty Flight was the very important Phipps broodmare Misty Morn, the 1955 Champion 3YO filly and 1963 Broodmare of the Year for foaling five SW and two Champions, namely the Champion 2YO Colts Bold Lad and Successor.)

Conclusions About Optimal Broodmare Sires For Victory Gallop
Cox's Ridge's 3rd dam Galleon Gold is a full sister to Victory Gallop's 7th dam Big Beauty; in both cases the sister comes in the context of Turn-To. The other great thing about Cox's Ridge is that his best daughter, champion 3YO Filly Life's Magic, was out of a mare by Victory Gallop's focal point ancestor Tom Rolfe. Good ones combining Cox's Ridge and Tom Rolfe's son Hoist The Flag include Donn H (GI) winner Mongoose (he was 4x4 to Tom Rolfe through Hoist The Flag and another son named Salt Marsh), and Santa Anita Derby (GI) runner-up Video Ranger. Note also Cox's Ridge got two of his best sons, Out Of Place and Sultry Song, from a Damascus mare and a Damascus granddaughter.

Alydar is the 2nd damsire of Victory Gallop's best so far and shows up in a highly impressive one out of three Victory Gallop sired stakes winners; in addition his close relative Pet Eagle was the 3rd dam of Galloping Gal, and Alydar's dam Sweet Tooth is 3x3 to Bull Lea, a key stallion for Victory Gallop, and by a stallion (On And On) from the Gallopade female family, the essential female strain for Victory Gallop.

Seattle Slew is the grandsire of Victory Gallop's 2nd best runner's dam, and his half-brother Lomond is the damsire of another one of Victory Gallop's six stakes winners. This makes sense since Seattle Slew's dam My Charmer is 3x3 to the full sisters Busher and Striking; both being by War Admiral and out a Bubbling Over mare. Note here that Victory Gallop's 3rd dam Glass Collector is by First Landing, a son of the great Bubbling Over mare Hildene; with a 3rd dam bred on a reverse cross of Sweep and Man O' War to War Admiral. Another good thing about Seattle Slew is that his grandsire Boldnesian is son of the fine Blue Larkspur broodmare Alablue, also the 3rd dam of Cryptoclearance. Since Alablue is bred on a reverse to the Bull Lea/Blue Larkspur nick; this makes Seattle Slew especially valuable for Victory Gallop in the context of Alydar and other sources of Bull Lea/Blue Larkspur cross like Miz Clementine, the dam of Best Turn, and Bull Page, the damsire of Nijinsky and grandsire of Storm Bird's dam South Ocean.

Seattle Slew's son Slew O' Gold was from a mare by Buckpasser, a good nick with Hoist The Flag and a source of War Admiral; and his 2nd dam, 1957's Champion 3YO Filly Bayou, was by Hill Prince; the Preakness winning half brother to Victory Gallop's 3rd damsire First Landing (both being out of the great Hildene).  Note that Bourtai, the dam of Bayou and 3rd dam of Slew O' Gold, is by Stimulus, a son of Ultimus who shows up in Vice Regent's pedigree as the damsire of Windfields; Stimulus traced back in the female line to Blue Filly (Hedgeford-Lady Thompkins, 12-b), a full sister to Victory Gallop's 17th dam Fiatt.  And also note that Bayou herself traces back to the same The Apple (9-f) line that produced Bull Lea. A total of 9 strains of Bull Lea are found in the dams of an impressive 4 (66.6%) of Victory Gallop's 6 stakes winners. Slew O' Gold's best get was Gorgeous, Ashland (GI), Vanity (GI), and Hollywood Oaks (GI) winning filly with a 2nd dam (Square Angel) inbred 3x5 to Bull Lea through his daughters Tap Day and Two Lea; so it seems Slew O' Gold tended to throw to his Victory Gallop liking female line.

Alleged is the damsire of two SW by Victory Gallop so far and the cross produces 3x4 inbreeding to Hoist The Flag. Another likely contributing factor to Alleged's success with Victory Gallop is that he's 3x4 to War Admiral, a relative of Victory Gallop's 3rd dam, and out of a mare by Prince John, an excellent nick to Halo. Note also that Cryptoclearance bred to a daughter of Alleged's son Sir Harry Lewis got BC Classic (GI) winner Volponi.

Private Account is by Damascus and nicks very well with Hoist The Flag; also note his dam Numbered Account is 3x4x5 to War Admiral and out of a mare by Swaps, who combined with Halo in the full siblings Devil's Bag, Glorious Song, and Saint Ballado.

Machiavellian and his son Vettori supply Coup De Folie, that tremendous French broodmare bred on a reverse relative to Victory Gallop I mentioned earlier. A Machiavellian mare bred to VG would also be 4x3 to Mr Prospector and a Vettori mare bred to him would be 4x4 to Mr Prospector. Note another good thing about Vettori is that his damsire is Sir Ivor, whose excellent nicking patterns with Victory Gallop were discussed in connection to Cryptoclearance.  Vettori would also inbreed 4x6 to Northern Dancer through Vice Regent and Nijinsky, a pattern which has worked in 3xtime Argentinean GI winner Campesino (4x4 to Northern Dancer), German GI winner Kaieteur (4x4), and the full brother and sister Por Algo Sera (4x4), the 2003/2004 Champion 3YO Turf Male of Peru, and Cabulero (4x4), the 2003/2004 Champion Grass Female of Peru. Additionally, Victory Gallop-Vettori Mare would be 5x6x6x6 to Turn-To, a very good stallion to linebreed to.  Also note that Vettori's 3rd dam Quill is also the 2nd dam of Run The Gantlet; thus Vettori's 3rd dam nicks well with the combination of two 4th generation ancestors, Tom Rolfe and First Landing, of Victory Gallop. One of them found on his sireside and the other on his damside.

As a half-brother to Machiavellian, Exit To Nowhere also supplies their dam Coup De Folie, and his grandsire Riverman is 2x3 to Nile Lilly and Be Faithful, two fillies strong to the Commando/Ben Brush cross which produced both granddams of Victory Gallop's key ancestress Hildene and the 2nd dam of his key ancestor Roman. Be Faithful was 2x4 to Black Toney (by Commando's son Peter Pan out of a mare by Ben Brush). And Nile Lilly (by Roman himself) was 3x3 to Look Up (by Commando's son Ultimus out of a mare by Ben Brush's son Sweep), and Fleur, a filly by Commando's grandson Pennant and out of a mare by Ben Brush's son Broomstick.

Jules was out of a mare, Bonita Francita, a daughter of Halo's son Devil's Bag; who was a ¾ sister to Coup De Folie; she was therefore also bred on the same reverse cross of Halo and Hoist The Flag that produced Victory Gallop. Another splendid thing about Jules mares for Victory Gallop is that it would not just be 4x5 to Hoist The Flag, but also 5x5x6 to Hoist The Flag's sire Tom Rolfe.

Wagon Limit's dam Darlin Lindy is bred on the same Cox's Ridge/Alydar cross that produced Fordyce, the dam of Victory U. S. A. And Darlin Lindy traces back to Blue Mass (a close relative to Hamburg) who traces back to the same A13-A18 female family that produced Enquirer, the damsire of Domino. There's good reason to like this family with Victory Gallop's Big Beauty (Young Maid Of The Oaks, 12-b) female line as 12-b and A18 combined in the very important sire Commando (note he was 4x5 in Hildene). Note also that Wagon Limit's best son so far, Hopeful (GI) winner Silver Wagon, has Big Beauty herself as his 6th dam.  Other good things about Wagon Limit mares for Victory Gallop are that his sire Conquistador Cielo is the other son of Mr Prospector besides Fappiano who seems to really like having him returned, and Wagon Limit himself is 4x4 Turn-To, making a Victory Gallop-Wagon Limit Mare foal 6x6x6x6 to that prepotent ancestor.

Jolie's Halo is by Halo and out of a mare by Sir Ivor. His 2nd dam Fleet Nasrullah traces back to the key Gallopade (23-b) family through Mannie Himyar, the 2nd dam of Ariel and ancestress of 15xtime SW Twilight Tear, that 2nd dam of Galloping Gal's 2nd damsire Gleaming.

Southern Halo is by Halo and out of a mare by Northern Dancer; simultaneous inbreeding to the Halo / Northern Dancer confluence looks really good to me and Southern Halo's 4th dam Lea Lark is by Bull Lea, a stallion who inbred to 5x6x6 in the dam of Victory U. S. A. and 4x4 in the 2nd dam of Galloping Gal; and out of Colosseum, a mare bred on the same Ariel on either Man O' War or his ¾ relative Oval cross as Victory Gallop's 6th dam Big Beauty.  Note that from only one example I could track down, Victory Gallop's 5th dam Log House (obviously a daughter of his 6th dam Big Beauty) has combined with Southern Halo's 4th dam Lea Lark (obviously a daughter of his 5th dam Colosseum) in 3xtime Stakes Winning filly Miss Prevel.

Devil His Due is by Halo's son Devil's Bag and out of a mare by Raise A Cup, a full brother of Galloping Gal's 2nd dam and a close relative to Victory U. S. A.'s 2nd damsire Alydar. A Devil His Due mare bred to Victory Gallop would be 3x4 to Halo and 5x5 to Raise A Native, and note that Victory Gallop's two top earners are also linebred to Raise A Native.  His youngest daughters are still a little too young, but Honor Glide mares should be a good choice for Victory Gallop when the time comes. His sire Honor Grades is a half brother to AP Indy, the damsire of Victory U. S. A, and his damsire Run The Gantlet is the pitch perfect precapitulation of Victory Gallop's pedigree.

Arch is by Roberto's son Kris S. and out of Aurora, a daughter of Danzig and Alydar's champion daughter Althea. Victory Gallop-Arch mare would be 5x5 to Hail To Reason, an excellent horse to linebreed to; through Halo and Roberto, who were both 4x4 to the great broodmare sire Blue Larkspur. Inbreeding to Hail To Reason in this fashion has already worked in Japanese Champion 3YO Filly and Triple Tiara winner Still In Love (3x3 to Hail To Reason) and Mariah's Storm (3x4), a very nice race filly who went on to be the dam of European Champion Giant's Causeway.  Like Fordyce, the dam of Victory U. S. A., and Mirror Bright, the 2nd dam of Galloping Gal, Arch is linebred to the great Calumet foundation sire Bull Lea. In the case of Arch, the linebreeding is 5x7x7 and just like Fordyce, two of the crosses come through Alydar.

Green Desert, a July Cup (GB-I) winner and an excellent sire of sprinters like Sheikh Albadou and Oasis Dream, would provide more speed than the last two recommended broodmare sires. His sire Danzig crosses well with Halo (see Pine Bluff, etc.), and sired Ascot Knight, the damsire of Victory Gallop's SW Victory Thrill. Green Desert's damsire is Sir Ivor, as previously mentioned, a key sire to look for in mates for Victory Gallop.

Montbrook is by far the most successful American based sire from his Buckpasser male-line; a stallion noted for nicking well with Hoist The Flag, the damsire of Victory Gallop's sire Cryptoclearance. Also in the sire of Montbrook is Swaps, a stallion whose great-granddaughter Ballade crossed good with Halo in the full siblings Devil's Bag, Glorious Song, and Saint Ballado. Note also that Montbrook traces way back to his 13th dam Cora (by American Eclipse-Young Maid Of The Oaks), a full sister to Katy Ann, the 18th dam of Victory Gallop.

Those who over-estimate the general extent of historical continuity are often imitated in a satiric manner by users of the humorism: "This is my grandfather's hammer; my father replaced the handle and I replaced the head."  But consider that though nothing is left of the original hammer; it is still a hammer. Perhaps It is even a hammer of the same size and approximate weight.

In the same way, a distant ancestor can have an effect on a modern day horse even if none of his or her genes are found in him, except perhaps the Mitochondrial DNA if it's a female line ancestress.  This line of Young Maid Of The Oaks was probably still having a direct effect on the damline of both Victory Gallop and  Montbrook as recently as Montbrook's 7th dam Froila, a daughter of Faustus; and Victory Gallop's 8th dam Golden Haze, a mare inbred 5x5 to Mannie Gray, a full sister to Faustus. Faustus and Mannie Gray were both strong to the Gallopade (23-b) line; a line noted for it's affinity with the Young Maid Of The Oaks (12-b) line from which descended both Victory Gallop's ancestress Golden Haze and Montbrook's ancestress Froila. There's a general tilt to older American strains in the progression of both female lines through time, and enough overlap to indicate a real affinity could develop if given a chance.
