by Daniel Goldszmid © Another Grade 1 Winner for Roy Several of those stallion were sent back to the U.S.A.. However, they didn´t match what was expected from them and they were sent, again, to the south. But with the same class that their South American offspring dominated, those stallions showed their quality and dominated again. As examples, we can mention Candy Stripes (sire of Different), that didn't transcend with his North American crop and was returned to Argentina. Last year, he sired City West and Tapatío, the best three-year-olds in Argentina. Roy, winner of nine straight Leading Sire statistics in Chile, and father of almost 90 stakes winners, has not been retained in North America after few crops. He was shuttled one year to Brazil and then to Argentina before being a permant resident in the latter. With his only production in Brazil, he was a leading sire and produced seven stakes winners. With his first two-year-olds in Argentina, results were excellent. Maybe the exception can be Southern Halo, sire of More Than Ready in his first generation in the U.S.A.. This seven-times Leading Sire in Argentina, top three as a broodmare sire, and with more than 90 stakes winners, still continues as shuttling at 18 years of age. New Real Deal is a Roy filly born in the U.S.A.. Sent to race to Argentina, he won five races, one second, in only six performances. She obtained the Gran Premio Criadores (G1), Gran Premio Ignacio and Ignacio E. Correas (G1), and was second in the Clasico Arturo R. Bullrich (G2). New Real Deal ran always on dirt. She won at first asking by six lengths over a the mile. Three weeks later, she won by three lengths at 1,800 meters. Same time later and at the same distance, she won by half a length. One month later, she was presented in her first stakes (a Group 2 at 2,000 meters), and was beaten, by two and a half lengths, by Slew The Moon (by Kitwood). Twenty-three days later, she won over Kalath Champ (by Ski Champ), by a neck, a Group 1 event at 2,500 meters. After a three months rest, she won again over the same distance, same category and same rival, by half a neck, after reacting when Kalath Champ seemed to keep the victory. Roy (USA, 1983), by Fappiano out of Adlibber, by Never Bend, won three races from two to three. He has a modest race record: three wins, twice second and three times third and earnings of $91,517. He won at two by 17 lengths over six furlongs and was second in the Sanford Stakes (G2), by a neck, to Sovereign Don. At three, he won two allowances and was third in the Jaipur Stakes (G3). As a sire, he started in Chile and sired more than 85 stakes winners, 27 Grade/Group 1 winners, 14 Champions and was Leading Sire for nine consecutive years. He Sired a great 20 percent stakes winners from foals. Roy's dam is a stakes winner of nine races, and also dam of the stakes winner Adira (by Affirmed) and the stake-placed and stakes producer, Ivor Jewel (by Sir Ivor). Roy descends from Frizeur through Janet Blair, his sixth dam. In Roy's seven generation pedigree, Frizeur appears twice through her daughter Myrtlewood (by Blue Larkspur), once via Miss Dogwood (the third dam of Mr. Prospector) and once via Gallawood (the second dam of Mr. Brick, sire of Roy's second dam). We can see that the two offspring of Myrtlewood, Gallawood and Miss Dogwood, were sired by the full siblings Sir Gallahad III and Bull Dog respectively. To deepen even more in one of the possible sources of quality in Roy, Gallawood was later combined with Bull Dog (sire of Mr. Brick's sire, John's Joy). Roy's fifth dam, Spur Flower, is by Blue Larkspur and was a three-quarter relative to Myrtewood. Spur Flower's daughter, Meadow Flower, is by Bull Lea, by Bull Dog, and so a relative cross to Gallawood and Miss Dogwood. New Real Deal's dam is Newhall Road (USA, 1993), a winner of two races and close relative to Regal Band (dam of Monarchos, the recent winner of the Kentucky Derby). Monarchos's dam is by Dixieland Band out of Regal Roberta, by Roberto ex Regal Road. Newhall Road is by Dixieland Band out of Maiden Lane, a full sister to Regal Roberta. This female family was well scrutinized at times of the Kentucky Derby. [Readers might refer to Les Brinsfield's article on Monarchos.] In the dams of both Monarchos and New Real Deal, it is interesting to note the combination of the half siblings Traffic Judge and Hasty Road, and the full sisters Delta Queen and Rarelea. It's also interesting that both Mr Prospector and Roberto have their dams bred in a similar style. Gold Digger is by Nashua out of Sequence, by Count Fleet out of a daughter of Bull Dog. And Bramalea is by Nashua out of Raralea, by Bull Lea, by Bull Dog. In seven generations, New Real Deal has Blue Larkspur four times and Bull Dog five times. She is also inbred to Hyperion seven times; Nearco five times; and Nasrullah four times, among others names. August 19, 2001. Copyright by Daniel
